A Time to Give
I know, I know the last thing you want to hear is a pitch about donating money and/or time to another organization. Fresh off an election and in a period where the economy still hasn't decided what it wants to do, giving just doesn't seem to be on the top of everyone's priority list. However, our chapter needs our help. Much to the chagrin of the Alumni Board, we have not held a formal giving campaign for the chapter in nearly twenty years. And, it is starting to show our records indicate that our scholarship fund, designated for academic and leadership scholarships, will be depleted within the next five years. The Board's operating expenses have been running less than $1,000 per year for the past five years. While we have been diligently making provisions for unexpected expenses and while we have been able to set aside a substantial reserve from our kitchen account, we are still in dire need of replenishing the scholarship account. Simply put, any dollar amount will point us in the right direction. If you have been paying attention over the past few years, you will have noticed that our chapter has outperformed expectations and has done an outstanding job in preserving the future of our chapter. Each year, the chapter is recognized for its excellence in programming, leadership, community service and academics. It is now our turn to pay tribute to their successes. If you'd like to make a donation to the Alumni Board, please send your check, made payable to "Theta Lambda Zeta Alumni Board", noting in the memo section, "Scholarship Foundation Donation" to: Charlie Chedester 528-9th Street West Des Moines, IA 50265 As always, any donation is tax deductible. (Consult with a tax professional for details). On behalf of the undergraduate chapter, I thank you for your consideration and donation. Giving today will help guarantee Theta Lambda's future! |

Alumni Spotlight
Meet two of your Board of Directors: Charlie Chedester and Eric "Slim" Updegraff. Charlie, Theta Lambda 1133, graduated from Simpson in 1999. He and his wife, Katherine live in Valley Junction, Iowa with their two dogs, Dakota and Gus and their rabbit, Buzz. Charlie works as a Financial Consultant for commercial and residential properties. Capitol Connection, LLC and Mortgage Innovations, LLC is owned and operated by Mark Bittle (a Simpson Alum), Charlie and two others. Charlie was previously a controller for AEG in St. Charles, Iowa.Charlie enjoys using his education along with the many skills that Lambda Chi helped him build. By having officer responsibilities as an undergraduate, it has helped him become a successful financial consultant. Believing in the fraternity as he does, Charlie is proud to serve on the Alumni Board to help ensure that the opportunities continue to be there for all brothers who come through the doors of Theta Lambda Zeta. In his free time, Charlie still enjoys getting out on the golf course and hunting. Other than that, he would love to have more functions with his fellow Lambda Chis. Eric Updegraff, better known as "Slim", was recently elected to the Board at the annual meeting in October 2004. Slim graduated from Simpson in 2001 with a degree in Economics. After graduation, he attended the University Of Iowa College Of Law for three years. During this time, he became a member and staff writer for the Journal of Corporation Law, one of the most respected legal reviews in the nation. Eric attended the College of Law on a full tuition scholarship from the Iowa Law Foundations called the "Iowa Law Merit Scholarship." Eric graduated from the College of Law with a Juris Doctorate Degree in May 2004. His grade point average put him in the top twenty percent of his graduating class. After graduation from the College of Law, Slim took the Iowa bar examination in July 2004. He passed the exam with a score in the top five percent in the nation. Currently, he is working as a law clerk on special projects fro Bruce H. Stoltze of the Brick Gentry law firm in Des Moines. A jovial sort who makes self-depreciating humor his trademark, Slim enjoys spending time with close friends and family, playing video games reading a good book that has nothing to do with law. Recently, Slim foolishly volunteered to join the Alumni Corporation Board, dooming himself to spend more time working with Kellar. One would think that all this education would have taught him better, apparently not! PDF format of this Theta Brief |
